Dear Jim I can only think that the device being described is a Hodge pessary. They have not been used for years now but were used to hold a womb which tended to tilt backwards in a forward position. There is no scientific backup for its use and it has been abandoned. They were used in people who had miscarriages (<14 weeks) with a backwards tilting womb but did and do not work. If your wife is 5 months (20+weeks) then miscarriage is mostly due to either premature womb activity or infection. It is impossible to be more helpful without more information. Please let me know if I can help further.
