blisters on nipple

I am nursing my 6 mos. old son (though not exclusively). I use a breast pump at work.

This weekend, I noticed that the nipple on my right breast was very sore. I examined it in the mirror and saw several small water blisters on it. I put lanolin on it overnight and they went away. Is there some way that I can avoid this?

My baby is also teething, if that helps. Thanks!
