My brother-in-law and his wife were in the same type of predicament with the exception that they were only 20 minutes drive (in heavy traffic) from the hospital. They were advised to leave the house in the earlier stages of labor (Her previous pregnancy had a labor from beginning to delivery of less than 3 hours) - in addition they were instructed to keep a bag in the car with a blanket and several towels - just in case. If it's affordable I think the hotel idea is the best idea - if not, then maybe some good basic emergency first aid information for keeping mother and baby safe until either paramedics arrive or the hospital is reached.
