Dear Michelle,

If he was doing an glove internal he was most likely feeling your cervix to see if it was open or closed. If he used the speculum he was most likely visually checking for spotting since you mentioned cramping. They also can feel for the enlargement of the uterus. For future exams you may want to ask the doctor what he will be doing and checking for before an exam. Whenever I have had an internal the doctor voluntarily explains his exam and what he is looking for before he does any vaginal exams with his glove. If your doctor doesn't provide an explaination and you are not comfortable then don't let him do the internal and ask for an explaination.

Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy!

Jenn
