In Dublin the Caesarean section rate is 8%. When I once worked in a hospital in London our Caesarean section rate was over 25%. The hospital I currently work in has a 13% C/S rate. The point I was trying to make is that there are many factors which influence what a woman's risk of a Caesarean section and we (doctors) don't quite know what they all are. It is true that some areas have higher C/S rates but this is probably something to do with the population they serve rather than the hospital being 'knife happy'. On an individual note, a woman who has has successful vaginal deliveries in the past is more likely to have a vaginal delivery in the future. Other women at a small increased risk of a C/S section include obese women (disputed by some), small women with small shoe sizes (again disputed by some), women over 38 (again disputed by some).
