Anencephaly is a condition where the babies brain doesn't develop properly. An anencephalic baby will not survive once it is born. Most cases occur spontaneously and there is no known cause for these. There is an association with folate defficiency and taking folate supplementation around the time of conception can decrease the risk by 30%. However, 70% of all cases will still occur. Some drugs are associated with anencephly such as epileptic drugs but in the main, most cases have no known cause.
