Hi Brenda,

The problem with an incompetent cervix is most of the time there are no symptoms to alert you. Classic Incompetent cervix is one that dilates painlessly without signs. Unfortunately it is not diagnosed in first pg until after its too late, when advanced dilation has already occured. Sometimes you may have symptoms. With my first loss at 23 weeks before i was diagnosed I had what felt like fluid leaking the day of the loss. I also had a pin dot of pink spotting. It turned out that I was leaking due to advanced dilation and bulging membranes. I really had no warning. I had another loss with a cerclage in and the symptoms I had leading up was cramping and pin dot of pink spotting. The spotting again did not occur until day of loss at 21 weeks. It was the same scenerio with advanced dilation and bulging membranes.

Some possible signs/symptoms to report to your Dr. may be, increased discharge, leaking fluid (could be just urine though)fever that may be a possible sign of infection, pelvic pressure and any change in cramping or sudden painful lower backache.

Having a cerclage placed will not always automatically fixs the problem and prevent miscarriages. One should be realistic and view it as a safety net but not fool proof to help a women with a previous loss get to term. Many of these are successful but a handful are not.

Hope this helps

Jenn
