Dry birth?From: Suzanne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 14 Sep 1998 23:50:35 -0500 (CDT)
I have been involved in several Internet discussions recently about whether or not there is such a thing as a "dry birth." Several medical professionals have said that it is an old wive's tale, because as long as the baby is still unborn, amniotic fluid continues to be produced by the membranes. Fetal urine was mentioned only in passing. In the lead article of the new Pregnancy & Birth section here on OBGYN.net, "Antepartal Fetal Surveillance" by Dr. Wiliam F. von Almen II, he said... "in the late 2nd and all the 3rd trimester, amniotic fluid is essentially fetal urine" This was news to me, and I cannot find it in any of the many books I have (including 2 textbooks). But hey, if it is, it is! I just want to make sure I'm telling my students, clients, and future patients correctly. So, now... IS there such thing as a dry birth? I've always said no, that the amniotic fluid continues to be constantly replenished, 1/3 of the total volume is new each hour, and that continues until the baby is born. If my answer is wrong, which it would seem to be, then what is the right answer?
