Hello,

I lost my previous pregnancy(twin) to severe growth restriction. I am a carieer of factor 5 leiden. My doctor has referred me to a hematologist for heparin shots. my question, is it necessary to take heparin and if so, will it affect my baby?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Usma, I'm sorry for your loss and hope this pregnancy goes well for you. It's very appropriate to refer you to a hematologist for assessment before Rx of LWMH(Heparin)because factor 5 Leiden's a complex issue and Heparin may/may not be the only treatment option, also some people with clotting disorders also have bleeding disorders, some patients develop sensitivities to Heparin possibily due to cross-reactive sensitivities, not in every case, but needs to be followed by an appropriate specialist, have you had referal to high risk doctor yet? If you require LWMH(Heparin)it's safe to take during pregnancy, you may also inquire about high risk folate suplementation(1-5mg). Here are some links regarding Heparin and factor 5 Leiden, the second an organization for factor 5 Leiden where you can ask more specific questions: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/isth2003/abstract.asp?id=9349 http://www.fvleiden.org/ask/low.htm I hope this helps and keep us posted on the new site, Marie
