Hello! I am 35 weeks pregnant after having gastric bypass on September 25, 2003. I lost 120 pounds prior to becoming pregnant. I have gained 17 pounds since becoming pregnant. I am now having problems with food. Everytime I eat I throw up. I am always tired, and have constant shakes. My ob has never had a gastric bypass patient and my surgeon has never had a pregnant patient. My primary doctor sadi to insist induction at 37 weeks, since the baby is of "normal" size. He said that if we wait much longer I may be too weak to deliver. Should I demand induction, or wait?

Dear Kelly, It sounds like you have some sort of electrolite imbalance and nutritional deficiencies which may occur following bypass in addition to the additional draw from the pregnancy as the baby takes what it needs from you. Most likely you are also dehydrated, and may require an IV. The weight gain during pregnancy is good. I hope that you have been taking at least prenatal vitamins and folate, iron and calcium/mag if not additional supplements. B6 can help with nausea? You need a complete and thorough set of labs before you insist on anything and referal or evaluation by a high risk doctor.

If you are B12 deficient and/or anemic that can cause problems, but should be treatable prior to any induction, also steroids to ripen the baby's lungs and to help avoid potential bleeding problems with delivery. Please remember many inductions result in C section. Take care and keep us posted on the new site as this goes away tomorrow, Marie
