AtSun,21Sep2003,Valeriewrote: Frustrated doesn't even state my current state...as far as the AAT, I never even heard of it...I was an adult-onset asthmatic following I believe from a chemical change after subtotal thyroidectomy...I would doubt they are going to test me for enything extra at this point...perhaps this AAT thing is why my doc is bothering with the amnio in the first place...Valerie

Dear Valerie, No,A1AD isn't why they use amnio, diferenttest, your doctor's being cautious, checking lungmaturity.A1AD can complicate many things without being considered. While there's no direct reason linking A1AD/thyroiddisease/asthma, A1AD is linked to many systems/functions one being immunesystem, this may be an indirect link, because prolongedstress eventually makes ATT levels fall, and with it susseptibility may increase, adultonset disorders. Many people with A1AD or families have thyroidproblems as well, my levels have been quite irratic during pregnancy and I always became sick following pregnancy or other tramatic experiences. My babies, both overdue, had jauntice but required sunlight for a few days, my nephew required a "Billi light" for 6 weeks.A1AD may be a reason for a baby's lungs and/or liver to be immature at37weeks when you would expect them to be mature, it's something that might explain why if that's the case. It's probably too late to test at this point if you are going to be induced, but you can order a test yourself for future use.If there is a family history of respiratory disorders, asthma or emphysema Goto http://www.alphaone.org or http://www.alpha1.org for more information, free&confidential testing.Don't worry about it now, order the test, you might ask your doctor about it, if they draw blood they can check levels which should be double during pregnancy so they should be above the mean and on the high side.Take care, now get some rest!Marie

AtSat,20Sep2003,Valeriewrote: I have been in a"non productive labor pattern"for sooooooo long...and the last55hrs have been very regular and very strong they kept me in the hospital overnight Weds to Thurs to give me morphine so I could get a little sleep and perhaps relax to dialate, but with no dialation they discharged me because I was less than37weeks(36+6 at the time...boy they are picky!:)at 37+3,we will do a amnio to verify lung maturity...

--
........Normally lungs should mature enough by37weeks for delivery w/o amnio
and use of asthma Rx/Prednisone used to mature lungs, you've been under
stress for some time and there may be other questions answered by amnio.
Have you ever been tested for alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency? This even in
recessive form may affect about 12% of the population, normally people are
asymptomatic, but is related to lung and liver functions....but AAT is acute
reactant, your serum levels should double during pregnancy, you want levels at
least above the mean and preferably on the high side of whichever scale is used.
