'pre-eclampsia?' treatmentFrom: Nicole (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 15 Sep 2003 18:12:03 -0500 (CDT)
I just had a baby a couple of months ago, and in the last few weeks of my pregnancy, I developed high blood pressure (150s/90s sometimes spiking up to 180/110), very severe swelling, and small amounts of protein in my urine. My doctor decided to just monitor me every couple of days. He wanted to put off inducing unless my protein would get up to +2. Fortunately, I went into labor naturally a week early, and had no problems. A friend of mine who was pregnant just started developing similar symptoms about a week ago. Her blood pressure was about 140s/90s, had small amount of swelling, and trace amounts of protein. Her doctor had her come to the hospital a few days after the start of these symptoms, gave her Magnesium (?), and induced her last Friday (3 weeks early from due date). She was very sick/tired from the Magnesium, which she had to be on for 24 hours after the birth because they kept telling her she could develop seizures at any time (her blood pressure stayed elevated afterward, but never went above 160/100). Her baby had to spend the first 24 hours in Neonatal because of breathing problems and jaundice, so she only saw her for about 5 minutes in that time - which caused some difficulties getting started nursing now. I'm just wondering if the difference in treatments is just due to different medical practices between doctors, or if there could be some factor I'm not thinking of. I just feel that much of my friends problems/stress could have been avoided by monitoring her rather than jumping to all of these medical interventions. Any thoughts?
