Subinvolution of uterusFrom: Alex (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 9 Sep 2003 20:32:19 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, my question is about subinvolution. I am 28 years old, had a c-section 8 weeks ago following a complicated pregnancy (twins, severe preeclampsia, bedrest and PPROM at 32 weeks). This was my second pregnancy, my first was a normal singleton pregnancy. I have been bleeding and passing fairly large clots since then. Occasionally, the bleeding will stop for a day or so, then start again. At my 2 week and 6 week checkups my OBGYN said this was due to hormones (I am breastfeeding) About a week ago I started passing what looked like tissue and saw one of the other doctors in the practice. She did a pelvic exam, vaginal ultrasound and endometrial biopsy. She said the ultrasound showed bleeding and large clots, diagnosed me with subinvolution and prescribed methergine after consultation with my doctor. It was the standard dose - I took it over the weekend (during which time I didn't bleed at all) and followed up with my doctor on Monday. He did an abdominal ultrasound and said that everything looked normal and he saw no clots. The pathologists report showed retained products of conception and placental tissue. Neither doctor performed the section, it was yet another doctor in the practice. My bleeding has started back and I actually am having more cramping than I was. My questions are: could my doctor have missed something on the ultrasound? Also, should I ask to be seen again (i.e. if there is anything left over in my uterus will it go away on its own, or will it need help)? Thanks!
