Contractions can be felt in your back or stomach. Contractions will also tighten your abdomen. In regular labor, they often come at regular intervals (ie, 10 mins apart, 7 mins apart, 5 mins apart, etc.) Ligament pain usually doesn't last as long, and may be more of a sharp, stabbing pain. Also, regular contractions won't go away if you change positions, walk, or rest.

Braxton Hicks are a little tricky for first-time moms to differentiate, and are sometimes what causes you some early dilation. They usually don't last very long (regular contractions are often 45 seconds to a minute in length).
