Re: amniocentesis and abortionFrom: Anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 31 Aug 2003 20:42:34 -0500 (CDT)
This is a very personal decision and the topic causes a great deal of judgemental "discussion" on boards such as these. The decision takes into account so many things - other children, first-hand experience with diseases and conditions such as the ones you mention, how one deals with the unknown and so, so many others, that the decision can only be yours and your partners alone. Your reasons for thinking that you don't want an amnio sound perfectly sound to me - even though I made the opposite decision. For me, it wasn't a matter of termination or not, but rather preparing myself if need be. Having had a baby already, I knew first hand what it felt like, after nine months and then 30 hours of excrutiating labour, to be handed a healthy, vibrant new baby. I simply couldn't imagine how painful it would be at the moment to give birth to a baby that was otherwise, unless I expected it. ...I wanted the time to prepare myself for that moment, if need be, and to educate myself on how to be a better mama for a baby with a specific disability or health problem. Becoming a new mother is a pretty steep learning curve as it is.... This doens't make me "right". It was simply right for me. It's a tough one and I wish you peace with your decision.... Also, in the event that you were wondering, the procedure is so much simpler, quick and painless than I ever expected...I watched my baby on ultrasound the whole time and, although the risks are true, I never felt at all like either of us was in danger.
