Re: Labor to be induced

Andi,

Instead of going to the hospital at 9 AM for the pitocin drip, ask your doctor about administering a cervadil gel for cervical ripening the night before. With a closed unfavorable cervix, pitocin alone will give you a less than 50% chance of laboring vaginally, while with a cervadil gel chances go up quite a bit, possibly as high as 80% if I remember the literature correctly.

I was induced due to oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) at 40w5d and gave birth the following day vaginally. The gel changed my cervix from 0 dialation 20% effaced to 100% effaced 1 cm dialated overnight. I strongly believe that the gel made the pitocin induction in the morning succeed.

Look up "Bishop score" on the internet to help you understand how induction and cervical condition are related. If you are induced for being overdue, without other complications, the birth can definitely wait a day while a gel has a chance to work for you.

Also, avoid getting an epidural before you are 5 cm dialated. Epidurals slow down labors, and getting one before you are in active labor will increase the likelyhood of your labor stopping and you needing a c-section.

Best wishes,
