Re: thrush - breastfeedingFrom: Michele (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 8 Aug 2003 12:34:22 -0500 (CDT)
I had mastitis quite a few times and once I got thrush on my nipples on top of it. You really need nystatin for you and your baby. I was told by my pharmacist that the antibiotics for the mastitis usually makes thrush worse. It's like when antibiotics give you a vaginal yeast infection. Thrush is also an infection caused by yeast. See your doctor and have it treated at the same time you treat the mastitis. If you don't, nipples with thrush sometimes crack and cracked nipples can cause mastitis. It's all related unfortunately. For me, the nystatin treatment for my baby's mouth cleared up his thrush but the nystatin cream for my nipples didn't work. I needed something stronger, so I went on a low dose of diflucan for 2-3 weeks and that did the trick. Make sure you get rid of both conditions so they don't reoccur.
