Pregnant @ 40 with Chonic HypertensionFrom: Kelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 8 Aug 2003 12:02:13 -0500 (CDT)
I am 40 and am 9 weeks pregnant. I have had chronic hypertension for the last 3 years. I was taking hctz until I was about 6 weeks pregnant when my OB changed me to Aldomet 500mg 2x a day. My last pregnancy was 12 years ago and during that pregnancy I had gestational diabetes (controlled by diet) and preeclampsia. They induced me 3 weeks early because my blood pressure was too high. I know I am still pretty early in this pregnancy, but I was wondering what the risks are that I will have the same issues (diabetes and preeclampsia) re-occur. Also, if they do re-occur would they more than likely be the same as last time or more severe? I guess I just want to mentally prepare myself for dealing with these health issues. I am especially concerned about the hypertension because it is a preexisting factor this time and wasn't last time. However on the good side, the Aldomet is working MUCH better than the hctz ever did. My bp was 117/72 at my appt yesterday and was routinely about 140/100 before. I am really happy about that.
