REPOST: Positive ovulation test? Or cheap test gone bad?

Hi, >

In the past I have based ovulation on cervical mucus and basal temperatures. Based on these methods, I appear to be ovulating around cycle day 16. This cycle, I took an ovulation prediction test on cycle day 9 and the test looked positive (both lines were the exact same color and brightness). I have never used this type of test before and I did buy the cheapest one, which may or may not mean anything. Anyway, I have sinced used one other brand and the rest of the box of the original kind and the test line has faded more each day and now is faint in comparison with the control line. I did not have the usual fertile cervical mucus when the ovulation predictor test said I was about to ovulate. What could cause this? Was it an inaccurate ovulation predictor test? Or did I ovulate early without the usual fertile mucus? My last period was 1 week late. Would that cause me to ovulate early on my next cycle? I appreciate your advice.

Thanks!
