? for DR: Mthfr/folic acid/afp'sFrom: Mandy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jul 2003 18:47:05 -0500 (CDT)
For the record Age:28, Pregnancies:13, children:2, currently pregnant. Problem Homozygenous mthfr abnormality.I have more than one question actually... First of all, i did not start heparin or folic acid until my seventh week of pregnany. Will starting this late increase the baby's risk of having neural tube defects? I am now taking 5 mg of folic acid QD. Also, in my first pregnancy my AFP's were low, but the baby was ok. Would the mthfr abnormality cause this deviation? Lastly, I am a nurse on a busy step down unit, I had some spotting early on (5 weeks)at work which resolved quickly. I've also hd some spotting on and off during work and it always resolves. Am I being too worried about this? Is the spotting more related to coincidence than to activity? I have planned to work right up until the end of my pregnancy but not work 12 hour shifts after the 7th month or so. I have read in some places that high-risk pregnant women should not work after the 24th week. It seems a little extreme. Should I be able to work until later in my pregnancy with only these minor complications?
