Re: Doctor said we should think about amniocentesisFrom: Katya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jul 2003 15:03:42 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Jennifer, Amnio is a way to test whether the baby is chromasomally normal. Since you are only at 9 weeks, you may also look at another procedure called CVS because it can be done earlier. Amnio and CVS are the only ways to know for sure whether the baby has Down syndrome or any other chromasomal abnormality, but both carry a considerable (0.5%-2%) miscarriage risk. Many women would terminate such a pregnancy. Neither test will determine if a baby is chromasomally normal but has a congenital deformity, such as a heart problem for example. You don't HAVE to do either test. I think your doctor just wanted you to start thinking about these issues now, not insisting that you have a test. I think he is bringing this up because he feels that you are very likely to carry this prgnancy to term - so congratulations! Please write back if you want more information. Sincerely,
-- Katya
