Re: FACOG means what?From: Michele (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 31 Jul 2003 13:01:39 -0500 (CDT)
Physicians may, on a voluntary basis, choose to become board-certified in their particular specialty. Board certification indicates that the physician has attained a high level of expertise in his specialty. Passing the certification examination confers the status of Diplomate (indicated by the abbreviation Dipl.). Medical specialists who are members of their specialty's national society may be called Fellows, and often use this designation. For example, the appellation Ann Smith, M.D., FACOG, indicates that she is not only a medical doctor, but also a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is therefore a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and, more than likely, board-certified. An M.D. with the FACS designation is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
