A question concerning pathology report on products of conceptionFrom: Maggie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 18 Jul 2003 14:46:17 -0500 (CDT)
My pathology report said that the "placental villi shows some sclerosis and some degenerative features. There are no cisterns identified." I was just wondering, since the ultrasound showed that it was about 5 wks, but I was actually at 11 wks - in other words it had been dead for 6 wks already - could that be why the placental villi showed some sclerosis? (Sorry this sounds gross) I know when I was handling what appeared to be part of the sack, it seemed tougher than I thought it would have been. I thought the placenta would be very soft. So was it decaying and that's why it was hard? I'm trying to understand if this was "normal" considering the circumstances, or if it gives clues to what caused the miscarriage. Also, if anyone can explain to me why they would look for "cisterns", I would appreciate it (not a word I've ever assocated with reproductive parts). Thanks AGAIN to everyone for sharing their knowledge.
