I was diagnosed with high blood pressure recently. We have been trying to conceive for over a year. Taking Tenormin (atenolol) seems very contraversal. I am taking 25 mg a day. Has anyone had a bad experience or fetal deformity with this medication? My doctor reassured me that it would not cause harm to me or the fetus and told me that many pregnant women take this. Any fed back I can get will be great. This is my second time posting. Thanks, Misty

Dear Misty, Atenolol is thought to be a fairly benign and heart protective approach to treatment of hypertension. Category"D" in pregnancy, no controlled studies in pregnant women, increased fetal absorption in animal studies(rats), no congenital anomalies (rats). Taken during 3rd-Trimester, increased risk of low-birthweight/slowed-growth, babies born with low-temperature, hypotension and slow heart-rate. Absorption of Atenolol can be decreased up to20% with food and greatly decreased with calcium supplements many TTC/pregnant women take. It may mask hypoglycemia in diabetes, interfere with the action of diuretics, kidney-function and thyroid-disease. It may interact with certain medications and intensify asthma symptoms and hot environments is increased risk. 25mg is the lowest dose available and the maximum suggested in certain sensitive populations. Dosing effectiveness diminished by prenatal vitamins/calcium. Things to consider are:What is your BP? What's your BP outside of the doctor's office? Any other health concerns? Have you tried non-Rx to lower BP?(diet-exercise-meditation-meteredbreathing-biofeedback)or trial on Atenolol to lower BP then switch to non-Rx for maintenance. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? I hope this helps, Marie
