Specific risks with external version

I am at 35 weeks 5 days with my first pregnancy and am 32 years old. Up until now, my pregnancy has been without complications. It is very obvious that the baby is in a breech position and has been for at least the past month (not confirmed by songram, but it is definitely a head that sticks out under my ribs). When I raised my concerns yesterday, my Dr. rather brusquely informed me that if the baby had not turned on its own by week 36 she could do an external version but that there is a chance that I "might lose the baby" and sugested that I might just want to plan on having a c-section without trying the version. This seems somewhat contrary to what I have read. Could someone please answer the following questions?

What are the chances (statistically speaking) that external version could seriously harm the baby or me? How do these compare with the same risks associated with a C-section? If no one has this, please let me know if anyone has heard of a study I could try to find on it.

What are the chances that the baby will turn on its own before week 36?

Should I have a sonogram before making a decision about how to proceed?

Should I get a second opinion?

Are there any known benefits to some of the exercises (kneeling with face to floor, laying with pelvis at a tilt for 20 minutes 3x a day) that are supposed to help convince the baby to turn? Would there be any harm?

Are there any other questions I should be asking?

What sort of congenital abnormalities are associated with breech babies?

Am I making too big of a deal out of this?

Thank You
