uti and Septra DSFrom: anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 11 Jul 2003 20:12:59 -0500 (CDT)
I am 20 weeks, and was just diagnosed with a uti. On Monday, the dipstick just came up with a trace of protein, but today they said I have a uti with the microorganism, Proteus Mirabilis. I had been on Macrobid 1x a day for prevention. However, this time, Macrobid will not work, because they said the infection is resistant to it. So, the nurse prescribed Septra DS. Is this safe in the second trimester? I am to take it for 10 days. Is there a safer alternative for Proteus? I realize that an untreated uti is very dangerous, but am I also putting my baby's life at risk with Septra? Could it cause birth defects or stillbirth? Thank you for your help.
