Re: 'Happiest baby on the block' tipsFrom: Katya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 5 Jul 2003 12:15:41 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Darcie, I am so glad swaddling worked for you! You are right - 20 hours of swaddling IS too much, and I was terribly worried about this in the first week when she was swaddled that much, but my baby cried and became frantic when unswaddled at first. So I had to teach her to be unswaddled. I literally used to count minutes - 10-20 min of unswaddled time between diapers, 20 minutes of baby massage, 15 minutes during bath, etc. Any longer and she would dissolve in screams. We gradually added minutes to freedom times. By 4 weeks, she was only swaddled at night and during the afternoon nap - that would be 11-12 hours a day (8-9 hours at night + 3 hours during the day). Baby is 7 weeks old. My baby was over her birthweight during the 1-week pediatric appointment and reaching her developmental milestones early so far, so the pediatrician approved what we were doing since the baby was clearly thriving. I believe that we as parents are here to listen to our children, and since my baby was giving every indication that lots of swaddling was right for her during the first 2 weeks, I followed her lead, but gently encouraged her to give up excessive swaddling time as best as I could. The essence of Dr. Karp's book is the explanation of the baby's calming reflex and how to turn it on. Swaddling is only 1 part; there are 4 more parts, and knowing them all may come in handy during a colicky spell. Best wishes to you and your five (wow!) kids,
-- Katya
