Don't be so quick to judge. Duct tape has thousands of uses except for "ducts" It's used medically to treat skin lesions. Swaddling has been done for thousands of years and does help young infants calm down because their neuro-systems are underdeveloped, in fact they are not finished until they are between 19-23 years! (which could be another time for swaddling with duct tape lol!) It is a practical matter of securing the ends of the cloths for safety reasons, like you would with a safety-pin or tie to secure something. Was it child abuse when we used cloth diapers and safety-pins? If these large blankets or cloths become unfixed with the baby thrashing about, the baby could become tangled in them. Remember today the current recommendation is not to use, pillows, bumper-pads or blankets, only appropriately warm sleep attire. I suppose you could sew on velcro(not self stick because it can come lose) tape, but the hook side is not very soft for baby's skin if there was contact. Getting the sticky tape residue off the cloths during laundry might be another topic for the forum.
