Re: 'Happiest baby on the block' tipsFrom: Katya (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 4 Jul 2003 16:24:47 -0500 (CDT)
Actually, many ancient cultures that attachment parenting copies use various devices to hold down the swaddling on older/active babies. Indian Americans used something called "pappoose" (I hope my spelling is correct) - it's actually a wooden board with holes for strings to hold the baby. Slavic people often used a small belt. Many indegenous cultures around the world carry the babies in a sling all day long, which also mimics the swaddling effect. Medieval pictures from Europe depict tightly swaddled babies with ribbons around their bodies. I should clarify that at no point the duct tape touches the baby or the first layer of clothing she is wearing, let alone her mouth! It goes around the swaddling cloths. If she decided to wake up at 1, 3, 5, and 7 AM for feedings I would feed and be grateful that I have a healthy baby. As things are, swaddling makes her safe and lets her sleep all night long. Best wishes,
-- Katya
