Re: babywise stuff

Just want to clarify- you DO NOT leave your baby crying for 6 hours while you sleep!!! What you do is put together a routine, based on three hour intervals. You feed the baby, play or cuddle or have some other kind of "wake time," and then you put the baby down for a nap. Then, about three hours after you started the last "cycle," you start again with feeding, wake time, sleep time, etc. This type of rhythm helps to stabilize the baby's hunger patterns, which in turn stabilizes the sleep patterns. You do feed the baby when s/he is hungry, regardless of whether it's been less than the three hours, but you do not pacify the baby with food. The general idea is to feed the baby meals every three hours rather than snacks every hour or 1.5 hours. That is what stabilizes their digestive systems and gets them into a nice stable routine. The way I think about it is, wouldn't you like to have a predictable time when you know you get to eat, or would you rather have to feel uncertain as to when that is and have to cry and get upset before someone knows you are hungry? Anyway, the point I wanted to stress is that you don't just say, "OK kid, it's time you sleep through the night!" and leave them crying and hungry for six hours. What actually happens is after several weeks, they drop the feeding on their own and just wake up for the next one. What happened with us is, I woke up my son at midnight, 3am, and 6am for the first several weeks, to make sure I got a good supply of breastmilk going. Then I just started waking him at midnight and letting him wake up for the next feeding on his own. He would generally wake up about 4am or 4:30am, and then I would feed him. I would then readjust the rest of the day by 15min increments so that by late afternoon, we'd be on our normal routine (noon, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, etc). Eventually, he would sleep all the way until 6am without needing to eat. Sorry if I'm getting into too much detail here, but I'm just here to say that our son is a thriving, happy child, and not all Babywise users are child abusers!! :) AAK
