However, he told me that the heart rate was really low, about 50 beats per min. and said that the baby looked to be in the early stages of a misscarriage. I suppose then my question is is there a possible chance that the baby could recover or is it more reasonable for me to expect the worst? please respond as soon as you can. Hello Colby, I am sorry that you are experiencing bleeding..it can be very concerning. If you are 5 weeks along, then it is possible that the baby's heart has only just begun to beat and so may be normal (it starts off slow and increases within the first few weeks)or unfortunately, it may not. Here is a link to a peer reviewed paper on heart rates at certain gestations. http://www.obgyn.net/english/pubs/features/dubose/ehr-age.htm and this one gives normal ranges of heart rates/measurements for gestation if you scroll down: http://www.ivfer.com/pg_calc.htm Best wishes to you and I hope that your dr can schedule you a follow up so that you can assess the baby's growth.
