Hi. I'm 32 years old and suffer severe migraines. I take elavil, maxalt and sometimes midrin. I just found out yesterday that I'm pregnant (surprise!) and I'm so worried because since my last period I have taken the above medication many, many times. I realize there's nothing I can do now but stop taking them, but exactly what are the risks I should be worried about.

Dear Shannon, Relax and breath........... The Rx cited are not totally contraindicated in pregnancy or known to cause severe defects in the 1st trimester, but it's best to be cautious during pregnancy. Don't stop taking any Rx without consulting with the perscribing provider, so your first call today will be to that provider informing them that you are pregnant and need to discuss your Rx. Studies of children exposed to tricyclic antidepressants in utero don't appear to develop neurodevelopmental delays beyond what is expected of "normal" populations. Contraindicated antimigraine Rx may contain, "EGROT" and/or combinations with egrot and/or other Rx creating new risks. The greatest problems with Maxalt and Midrin would be complications with hypertension etc. that might develop during pregnancy and abnormal variations in HR(heart-rate). Elivil may cause several problems during pregnancy including but not limited to: sleepiness, when you take it may be a factor, variations in HR and constipation. The cause of your migrains, if known, will greatly enhance your options for other types of therapy. http://www.pregnancyanddepression.com/ is a site with links to information re many Rx and pregnancy. Best wishes, Marie
