The "smell" the smoke may not be harmful, secondhand smoke is, the toxins linger long after the smell has dissipated. Smoke from the burning end of cigarettes contains:200 poisons, arsenic, cyanide, tiny particles of soot, tar which travel deep into their lungs and toxic-gases like carbon-monoxide, there are other forms of toxic vapors you may encounter in everyday life. Infants lungs are more susceptible to the hazards of secondhand smoke for a number of reasons. A genetic condition called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, may affect even those who have a recessive form of the disease, making them more sensitive to smoke&environmental toxins. If there is a family history of respiratory disorders, asthma or emphysema, more reasons for caution with your precious newborn. Goto http://www.alphaone.org or http://www.alpha1.org for more information, free&confidential testing, or type in, "secondhand smoke" on the net. Perhaps this issue will raise your awareness to other dangers&promote healthier lifestyles. Often people who smoke, believe smoking outside, eliminates all danger, but frequently smoke right in front of the door, letting in what they have kept out as they reenter. You might suggest a covered container to dispose of the butts&smoking well away from the entrances to the house in an appropriate place. How you handle the other issues, is best left up to you as you know your mother best. Best of luck.

My mother (a smoker) will be coming to stay for awhile. She will only smoke outside. However, she always smells of smoke (i.e., her hands, her breath, her clothes). Could the smell of this smoke cause any health issues for my newborn baby?
