Perhaps you could have her wash her hands up to her elbows (using the excuse that everyone should anyway) before touching the baby and then put a burp rag under where she holds the baby. I would not worry about it harming the baby, but I wouldn't want my newborn to smell smoky either. Some things should be sacred, and newborn smell should be one of them.
