Severe Acid Reflux during pregnancyFrom: Tiffany (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 7 Jun 2003 22:14:02 -0500 (CDT)
I am 27 years old, 14 1/2 weeks pregnant (no previous births or miscarriages) and suffering from severe acid relux - throwing up 3-4 times per day - everything I eat. I have tried all the dietary suggestions with no relief. (My OB suggested Pepcid AC, which worked about 4 weeks ago when the symptoms were just starting). I called my OB this week and he referred me to my primary care physician for help. I couldn't get an appointment with my physician until this coming week, so I ended up going to the urgent care 3 days ago and seeing an RN because I felt so awful! I have acid in my throat constantly, heartburn, and have developed a cough which causes me to vomit up everything I have eaten. Sleeping on an incline is also not helping. The RN prescribed Reglan (didn't help me) and told me to see my physician for something stronger if it didn't help. I have tried Pepcid, Tums, Maalox, and Mylanta. What else can anyone suggest? I am cosidering asking my doc about Prevacid or Nexium. Are those safe and what are the chances that a primary care physician would prescribe them to a pregnant woman? Also, GERD runs in my family and I've been told by everyone that it will get worse the more pregnant I get. But I am so concerned that I'm not eating enough and that I can't keep anything down. Please Respond!!! Thanks in advance for your help!
