Re: Fertilty questions related to being late 30's and breastfeeding? (From: lynn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 29 May 2003 22:44:48 -0400
Hi Raquel, I am not a doc, but I had asked a similar questions some time back because I was worried about my age and ttc (I'm 38), and thought I may be "running out" of eggs. The answer I had gotten was that it's not really the quantity of eggs because a woman is born with over 100,000 eggs. What's the bigger concern the older you get is more-so the quality of your eggs. The older you get, the poorer the quality, thus the harder it is to conceive and the more likely you are to have a child with a chromosonal abnormality (such as down's) and the more likely you are to miscarry an "imperfect" baby. Sounds gloomy, but as I'm sure you know, soooo many women go on to have perfect babies into their 40's. To answer your other question, OPK's never worked for me personally. My dr. told me they were a waste of money, and if you have sex every other day between days 8-18, you shouldn't need an OPK. A simple blood test will tell you if you are ovulating at all, if that is a concern. Good Luck! Peace, Lynn
