I agree with the doc, she has to be seen. If Grandma has no interest in watching her grandkids then discount her completely (better to leave them with someone with some compassion.) If she belongs to a church, ask the minister if there is someone that can help watch them for a few hours. These issues are handled quickly and quietly in my parish and the mom gets the added benefit of a caring minister in addition to some meals brought in from the ministry for the sick. If church is no answer, try to locate a neighbor, active retiree, etc that can watch the kids. Or even search the web for a mom's group in the area. They can be a great source of assistance!
