I am in Albuquerque (5,300 feet above sea level), and we were told that
babies are born with a blueish color to their extremities because of the
decreased oxygen here. For that reason, new born babies here rarely
score above 9 on the Apgar scale (10 is the best). During a previous
pregnancy, I mentioned to my OB/GYN that I had gone up into the
mountains hiking during the first 2 months, and he said 'Well, you've
already done it, so don't worry about it, but try to avoid going up
there.' I guess the reason is that the concentration of oxygen in the
air drops as you go up, and especially if you are moving around it can
be bad. So I am avoiding the mountains this time, although they are
very tempting as it gets hotter and hotter here in Albuquerque.
