what is the truth on breastfeeding and birth control

If I am breastfeeding my baby exclusively (ie, baby gets no solid food or bottles), how long can I expect this to be effective birth control (preventing ovulation) ...?? Some classes teach it is good for a year, my doc says 3 months for sure, maybe 5.. ...

(of course I realize that someone will jump in with an "I was pregnant one month later" story but I'd really like a medical response as to what a normal situation would look like...)
