Vitamin A supplement during pregnancyFrom: Maria (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 24 May 2003 12:45:05 -0500 (CDT)
Hello. I am about 4 weeks pregnant. My last menstrual period started on April 20th and today is the 24th of May. I have been taking during the past year one softgel a day (half a serving) of a multiple vitamin and mineral supplement. This supplement contains 25,000 IU of Vitamin A per serving (2 softgels)60% as Beta Carotene and 40% from Fish Liver Oil. I just read that high dosis of Vitamin A can cause birth defects. I am worried that my intake of Vitamin A may have damaged my baby. I also read that betacarotene is supposed to be safe, but fish liver oil poses a risk. Was the dosis I took high enough to cause any harm to my baby?? I will start taking prenatal vitamins right now. Please, advice!!!
