Hi Michele, Effexor treats both depression and anxiety. Anxiety frequently accompanies depression. Have you tried the newer drug Lexapro? It treats depression and anxiety with fewer side effects than other antidepressants. I am not severely depressed but I have some anxiety and take Lexapro even though it is for "severe depression episodes". I believe it's often prescribed for milder depression and even menopausal symptoms as it works well without side effects, and apparently works faster than most other antidepressants. Doctors can prescribe meds for other uses even though the manufacturer may state it's for "severe depression". I hope you are feeling better soon.
