Well I've had sciatica quite a bit with this pregnancy and there are two things that seem to help:

1. Walking. At first, it hurts like hell and I think "my god I can't walk to the end of the block" but I find if I keep going keep going it really helps the sciatica overall. Walk every day. (But I wouldn't try this for a few days in your case- seems like you've got an acute attack. Wait until it just hurts, not when you're still nearly immobile).

2. The yoga butterfly pose. (If you type it into google I bet you can find a picture. Basically, sit down on the floor, legs in front of you with your feet together... )

That's all I can offer, unfortunately. Sciatica is nasty. Your mother is right, by this point you shouldn't lay flat on your back for too long. Lay on your left side...
