Re: Rules on eating fish while pregnantFrom: Alicia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 7 May 2003 20:35:58 -0500 (CDT)
Jan, Eating fish has been a contraversial topic but research has shown that fish can provide omega 3 fatty acids which will help nourish your baby. According to EPA guidelines, you should avoid fish such as mackerel, shark, swordfish, and tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury which can harm a fetus. As long as it is well-cooked, salmon, bass, flounder, perch, cod, trout, and tuna (they say canned is safer than fresh) are safe. Government guidelines consider about 12 oz of cooked fish per week as safe. My doctor personally advised me to eat fish in moderation and to avoid raw or undercooked fish and shellfish. Hope this helps! Good luck!
