Dear Misty,

This is clearly a question of opinions and comfort levels, so there are no right and wrong answers, just an assessment based on your e-mail.

1. I would change doctors. It is very important to be with a doctor who is willing to work WITH you, not on you.

2. Driving an hour would be OK if not for your history of preterm labor. What if you have some mild contractions at 30 weeks that need to be checked out? What if you have to go to L&D for preterm labor and your doc is 1 hour away? I would try to avoid the time lag.

3. So, here is a compromise: call your beloved previous doctor and ask her to recommend someone in your new area. Tell her the type of a doctor you are looking for - try to be as specific as possible. Perhaps she will recommend 2 or 3, at which point you can do interviews and decide who works for you.

4. If you are not able to switch doctors (insurance, other issues), I would seriously consider getting a doula for the labor - that way, you will have someone one at your side at all times.

Best wishes to you,
