Re: Age 47 - Artificial Insemination - possible delivery?From: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 30 Apr 2003 10:04:37 -0500 (CDT)
Lee Ann, As long as you are realistic about your chances go for it. The problem is that once you enter the TTC world it becomes extremely stressful. I began this process at age 32, 1 kid, 2 miscarriages, and lots of medical tests and ovulation drugs latter I'm very stressed and I have not even gone through the full IVF process. They tell me that I have about and 8-10% chance of getting pregnant each cycle at age 37 and around a 25-30% chance of miscarriage if I do get pregnant. The problem is the quality of eggs as you age. You can be ovulating every month but the egg is of such poor quality that no pregnancy results. I'm not sure that the probabilty of sucess for you is worth the stress that it will cause in your life and marriage. You will have to determine this but I would suggest you become a parent through other means (adoption or IVF with donor eggs). Many of the people who we hear about having children late in life never had any fertility issues to begin with so they were more likely to suceed than you or I. I think that the best thing to do is to tell the young women of today that the biological clock is real (they may not believe us but that's another story)and that, if possible, they should attempt to have their children in their 20's and not wait until that perfect time. Best of luck, Nancy
