Pregnancy, breastfeeding and ITPFrom: Nancy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 22 Apr 2003 18:59:10 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I have a couple of questions. I was diagnosed with ITP, platelet count about 1000, during a twin pregnancy. Delivered at 34 weeks on Feb 24 2003. I had a quick increase in platelets to nearly 200k, but over next few weeks have dropped to under 10k, and stayed there despite IVIG and Prednisone. I am breastfeeding. Can the breastfeeding contribute to the continued ITP? Splenectomy seems to be the road I am headed down, but I would prefer to avoid it. Second, I have developed terrible acne, apparently from the predisone, and a dermatologist has prescribed Bactrim. Some sources seem to say Bactrim should not be used while breastfeeding, also some say Bactrim can contribute to ITP!! I really need some advice on these issues. Thanks!
