Melissa,

While I have to agree with most of what you said, you lost my empathy and compassion when you threw in your comment about kicking the dog. To me, my pets are my children and to hear someone flippantly make that comment, even is it was made as a joke (in which I fail to see the humor), really hurts my heart. It wasn't a necessary addition to prove whatever point you thought you were making.

I find it truly ironic to talk about treating people with respect and then mention disrespecting an animal in the same breath.
