Re: Should I Worry About Premature Labor?From: Alicia (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 Apr 2003 02:30:34 -0500 (CDT)
Beverly, I am due May 18th too! My baby has also dropped and I have really bad cramping at night too (which explains why I'm posting at almost 3 in the morning!) My doc was concerned about this for a while but said not to worry once I hit 36 weeks. She says that my body is preparing for delivery and as long as labor doesn't actually begin before 36 weeks, this is completely normal. Only 1 week, 1 day to go! This is my first pregnancy so I had no idea what to expect except for what I had read in books and on the internet. I'm not a doc but I've done tons of research. Most likely, your baby dropping has caused the pressure on your bladder and bowels. The cramping you are feeling could be from braxton-hicks contractions, they often become more painful around this time and I've heard they often worsen with subsequent pregnancies. Also, second time mothers tend to begin to dialate and efface weeks before labor begins so maybe your body is just in preparation mode. I have been seeing my doc every week for about a month now because of preterm labor symptoms but I'm assuming your weekly visits have yet to begin. I would call your doc if your next visit is a considerable amount of time away, just to ease your mind. I'm sure that everything will be fine. Good luck! I'll keep you in my thoughts - let me know how things turn out. It's great to "chat" with someone due the same time as me! P.S. I have found that a heating pad on a low setting does wonders for the back pain. I've also used it for ten or fifteen minutes at a time on my belly when I have intense cramps and it eases it a little bit.
