paxil and pregnancyFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 31 Mar 2003 21:44:23 -0600 (CST)
I currently take 20mg. daily. I'd like to try to conceive and am worried about the effects on the fetus, embryo and early childhood development. I have read some material on anti-depressants and pregnancy and understand that there has not been enough research on all of the new ones (thus the class C status)to determine if harmful. The only one in class B is Prozac and the rating means there's no likely effect on the fetus/embryo/developing child. As such, since I'm not nor have I ever been suicidal, but just feel better on meds, should I risk the health of my fetus/embryo/child by staying on Paxil (class C) or should I reduce the risk by switching to Prozac (class B)? Alternatively, should I just eliminate all meds so as not to pose any risk at all to my fetus/embryo/child? Please answer as if you were advising your own wife or daughter. I can live without meds if I have to and know if I stayed on meds and there was a problem, I'd blame myself for being selfish. Lastly, how long should I be off meds before trying to conceive?
