Vanishing twin,but no foetus,only sac??From: Joanne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 31 Mar 2003 20:11:04 +0100
Hello from Scotland, I am in an isolated area of North Scotland and I am annoyed about the lack of information on vanishing twins provided (or not, as the case may be) by the Gynaecologist. I only disocvered I was pregnant at the 10th week via a pregnancy test. At 12 weeks I had the sonogram only 1 heart beat heard, at ultrasound at 13weeks there was also only one foetus (but a second sac present). I also had a myomectomy about 7 months ago to remove uterine fibroid (9cm and some clusters), at the 13 week scan there was also another fibriod present. At the 15 week scan the sac was still present and the fibriod. The Gynaecologist said the sac might reduce and the sac will disperse into the womb but what is worrying is this long membrane type of feature which runs fromthe top of my womb to the cervix end, the Gynae said he doesnt know what it is, but that it could wrap itself around the remaining babies foot. Naturally I am concerned. Do you know what this might be?? 1) Since apparently the vanishing twin syndrome may be caused by a chromosome or genetic abnormality, what chances does the other singleton have of having some form of genetic abnormality. I am also unsure whether to have a amnio. 2) Would I have to give birth via 'C' section due to the uterine fibroid? and am concerned about the loss of blood. Please help if you can, any information would be useful even a link to another site, if you feel unable to help. desperate.
